Blue Hawaii Artists Rendition

In 1999, responding to a Request for Proposal by the County of Maui, Lokahi Pacific developed a project to reconstruct a dilapidated structure in the heart of “old” Wailuku town known as the Blue Hawaii Building. This proposal was part of an overall vision by the County of Maui to revitalize Wailuku town, which had formerly been the center for all Maui commerce and civic activities.

The original two-story, 5,000 square foot building was constructed in the 1920’s. The property is owned by the County of Maui, which granted Lokahi Pacific a thirty-year lease, at $1 per year, to facilitate its redevelopment. The building had been vacant for many years and its rapidly deteriorating condition led to its demolition in November, 2003.

The new building’s facade was re-constructed to reflect its original appearance, including fabrication of the original canopy over the sidewalk, to maintain the "turn of the century" street-front appearance of old Wailuku town. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Pono Center consists of 9,700 square feet and has three floors incorporating the following spaces:

Ground floor street frontage space now houses a restaurant situated along the promenade between the historic Iao Theatre and the new Lokahi Pacific building.

Cafe O'Lei in the Pono Center The ground level rear is the home of Maui’s first shared-use, licensed commercial kitchen. This fully-equipped two-station kitchen is operated by Lokahi Pacific as part of its small business incubation program. The stations are available for use by the community of Maui.

The second floor is residential and includes four one-bedroom apartments with a laundry facility and storage area for the residents.

The top floor houses the small business incubators, comprising a shared office space concept for up to 11 start-up businesses, with a conference room, a state-of-the-art training center, business support equipment and services, and a small business resource library.

The overall project cost upon completion was $4 million.

Admissions Policy

To be accepted as a resident of Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Pono Center, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Be an adult (18 years and older) of any age, sex or ethnicity.
2. Be a family of no more than three individuals of any age, sex or ethnicity.
3. Income limit of 50% or less of the median income for Maui County.

Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Pono Center is not a government subsidized rental project, therefore, tenants must be capable of paying full rent. Contact Lokahi Pacific for current rents charged.
